The Kurgan people were indigenous to the Black Sea area of the Russian steppe. They are the probable source of the Proto-Indo-European language from which almost all European languages are derived. The name "Kurgan" comes from the Russian word for burial mound. In this film the principal villain is known as "The Kurgan," rather than just Kurgan, indicating he is a member of this early tribe of the steppes.
