Nick Cotton was not added to the original cast until the last minute. Creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland had not intended for Reg Cox's murder to be solved - it was merely meant to emphasise the toughness of life in Walford - but their writing team all wanted to know who the killer was. As a result, the character of Nick was created to fill the role of the murderer. Because he was a late addition, Nick was the only character not cast by Smith and Holland, with the directors team choosing John Altman. Altman would ultimately play Nick on and off for 30 years.
