Quentin Tarantino was reluctant to doctor the script because it was not his own project or idea, but Tony Scott, who he had been friends with since Scott directed the Tarantino-penned Una vita al massimo (1993), persuaded him. Tarantino said Scott tried to have him come on board later projects in a similar capacity, but he felt it would distract from his own writing process.
