Since this was written as a buddy comedy, they were looking for a buddy for Norm MacDonald. They told him that since he was a skinny guy, his buddy should be a fat guy. And so they looked at every fat guy in Hollywood, but nobody seemed to work for the role, and they were beginning to panic. One night, Norm turned on MADtv (1995) and saw Artie Lange. He was talking to the camera as himself, not in character. Norm thought he was hilarious, and that he even reminded him of John Belushi. He called producer Robert Simonds telling him he wanted Artie and Bob agreed. But, an hour later the producer called back telling Norm that Artie had just gotten arrested for drugs. Norm got nervous but the producer said it can still work and they made sure that he stayed clean while shooting in Canada.
