In the novel, it's revealed that Helen (Aech) is gay. Though never mentioned in the movie, it is alluded to retrospectively when considering the Shining scene in room 237, when the 'naked bathtub lady' comes onto to Aech, who responds by saying "You know what? I'm gonna go with it". At this point in the movie, it's still assumed Aech is a man.
