The main exceptions to the silicone rule were the exploding heads. These were made from rigid foam with a foam latex skin. As special effects makeup head Tony Gardner explained, the positions in which the heads were required to be supported, with the skin and skull underneath, would have been too heavy if constructed from silicone.
