Mike Evans left the role of Lionel Jefferson after the first season to join the writing staff of Good Times (1974) (which he had helped Norman Lear create over a year earlier). However, Evans wasn't given a lot to do, so he returned to acting. With the role of Lionel already taken, he appeared on other series including a regular role on the final season of the medical sit-com The Practice (1976). When Damon Evans, his replacement on The Jeffersons, left this series, Mike returned in a recurring capacity. He was heavily into real estate by then and didn't need to rely on his acting career. According to Sherman Hemsley, Mike never wanted to be an actor.
