Under "Anachronisms" it says the fleur de lis could not have been used as a symbol on Alfred's crown, but that isn't entirely true. The symbol is an ancient one, not exclusive to France. It has been used in many forms, from irises to ears of corn which symbolize fertility and are most definitely used in the Danish Eddas and herald the arrival of Beowulf.
