Because none of the actors are from New York, the filmmakers brought in dialect coach Jerome Butler to create a cohesive accent, which was then customized for each character. "Tom is a native English speaker, so I asked him to play a straight Brooklyn accent," says Michaël R. Roskam. "Noomi is Swedish and I didn't mind if she had a slightly different accent. Her character might have come here at 12 or 18 and could still retain a little touch of something else, but she speaks good English. The differences are very credible and very close to the Brooklyn reality. And then there is Matthias who likes to play those Brooklyn accents. He just loves doing it and he's actually really good at it, as well."
