In the early driving scenes when David Mann has entered the desert he listens to a prank call to the Census Bureau on the radio. The DJ making the call is legendary LA radio personality "Sweet" Dick Whittington. His call is concerning whether he should label himself "head of his household" since his wife is really in charge; A theme of lost masculinity that becomes central to the story.
