The program was initially conceived due to the frustration of its creator Jim Henson with typecasting. Since 1969, his characters were in use in the popular children's show "Sesame Street", and Henson increasingly found himself typecast as a children's entertainer. "The Muppet Show" was his attempt to appeal to an adult audience.
