Nicholas Meyer added a "no smoking" to the bridge of the Enterprise, as he felt smoking and other twentieth century habits were still likely to survive centuries in the future. The rest of the creative team disliked the idea. The sign appeared in the first shot of the film, but was removed for all others appearing in the final cut of the film. In 'StarTrek V: The Final Frontier (1989)' directed by William Shatner, a Federation diplomat smoked. When Meyer returned as director for 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)' an alien also smoked. Meyer and DeForest Kelley smoked cigars, between takes, during filming.
