After the film was torn down to pieces by producer Jerry Bresler in the cutting room without the agreement of Sam Peckinpah, the latter discovered the devastating results during the first public screening. According to James Coburn's wife, who was near him at this moment, Peckinpah nearly collapsed, shaking so much that he dropped a bottle of whiskey that he held. She added that if Jerry Bresler had been here at this moment, Peckinpah would have killed him.
