The scene where the group fights Smaug in the forges and tries to cover him in molten gold is not in the book. It was added because the filmmakers needed a cliffhanger when it was decided to make not two but three movies (they confirmed this when asked). The actors and some of the crew literally had no idea what they were filming until they saw the completed movie. The result is Smaug briefly covered in gold, a reference to one of his titles, "Smaug the Golden".
