An APGAR score is a means of assessing the health of a baby. It is an acronym composed of the following terms: 1) Appearance (skin color) 2) Pulse 3) Grimace (reflex irritability) 4) Activity (muscle tone) 5) Respiration. Each element is given a score of either 0,1,or 2. A cumulative score of 7 or better is good. The test is named after the inventor of said test, American Physician Virginia Apgar in 1952.
