While creating a backstory for the villain Dr. Viper, writer/story editor Glenn Leopold added the letters "S,O,U,L" to Dr. Viper and rearranged the letters. The name became Elrod Purvis, which was the previous name of Dr. Viper. So by removing Purvis' soul (i.e., he dies), he becomes Dr. Viper (the formula brings him back to life as an undead mutant).
