A nice bit of foreshadowing occurs right after Uncle Vernon checks on Harry's room during the dinner scene with the Masons. When Uncle Vernon leaves the bedroom, the hidden house elf exits Harry's closet and casually tosses aside one of Harry's socks which had accidentally stuck on his shoulder. This foreshadows that Harry will eventually use a sock to free Dobby from enslavement.
