In the years since her appearances in the first season of the original series, Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Janice Rand) had struggled with her career, battled alcoholism, marijuana addiction and generally struggled for money. William Shatner was one of the few of the original cast who had keep in contact with her as he had always thought she had been unfairly treated on the series, especially after it emerged she had been sexually assaulted by a television executive and then fired to cover up the scandal, which probably contributed to her woes. When negotiations to bring Leonard Nimoy into the cast got underway, Shatner rang Nimoy to suggest he use his bargaining position to help get Whitney a much needed paycheck by insisting Paramount Studios incorporate her into this film. Nimoy duly obliged and the studio reluctantly gave in to his demand by giving her two days paid work in a cameo role (as Yeoman Rand). Nimoy and Shatner also managed to use their clout to get her cameo roles in several of the sequels.
