Most exterior filming took place in Ouarzazate, Morocco, where Sir Ridley Scott had also filmed Il gladiatore (2000) and Black Hawk Down - Black Hawk abbattuto (2001). A massive replica of Jerusalem was constructed in the desert. The set contained 28,000 square meters (301,389 square feet) of wall, and used 6,000 tons of plaster. The front of the set was 1,200 feet (365.76 meters) long, and the walls were 56 feet (17 meters) tall.
