The London and Broadway theater productions ran for 20 years, turned into the 4th-highest grossing musical ever, and won the Tony for best musical. Similar things happened to Mame (1974), I'm magic (1978), Chorus Line (1985), and Rent (2005), which were all Broadway sensations, but then bombs as movies.
