In the book, the Calliope (Sandecker's personal yacht in the film) was a decked out, purpose-built, micro-warship with a science lab. The explosive scuttling was done at night to escape the Malian Naval and Air forces, including a luxury jet carrying General Kazim. Eva and Frank were never on it.
