Before Mufasa scolds Simba for disobeying him Zazu reminds Mufusa he once knew a cub who was also reckless. This very strongly implies the cub Zazu described was Mufasa himself. This also means Zazu is actually older than Mufasa. This means Zazu is along with Rafiki one of the eldest characters in the film.
