In December 2019, Ryan Reynolds announced that a new Deadpool film is in active development with Marvel Studios. This was to make it the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to serve as a sequel to a film produced outside of the series, however in December of 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home served as a sequel to both the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies as well as the Marc Webb ones.
