One of the film's major influences was Henry De Vere Stacpoole's "The Blue Lagoon," a novel that produced two notable film adaptations, Incantesimo dei mari del Sud (1949) and Laguna blu (1980). Both "The Blue Lagoon" and Barry Jenkins' film deal with two runaways who grow up in a hostile environment.
