Simon Helberg had read the script for the first pilot, which was filmed but rejected. When the makers approached him to audition for the second pilot a year later, he nearly passed on it as he didn't really like the script and had become a regular guest on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006). His agent persuaded him to audition anyway, and when Chuck Lorre loved his interpretation of Howard Wolowitz, he took the part.
