The Chuck's Cafe scene contains a signature Steven Spielberg technique which he borrowed from director's, Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock. David Mann enters the cafe, walks down the hall, enters the men's restroom and conducts his business, leaves back down the hall into the dining room and spots the truck outside the window; all of this action is done in one continuous take without any breaks, also called in cinematic parlance as a long take, or a "oner"; done in one shot. The entire shot takes 2 minutes and 45 seconds. This was filmed in the days before Steadicam, making it quite a difficult shot to capture without drawing attention to the camera operator's movements. Spielberg re-uses this technique to heighten dramatic tension in every one of his films since.
