The series was an instant hit, and quickly became one of the few successful shows airing on NBC which was struggling at the time. As a result, Charlotte Rae was spun into L'albero delle mele (1979) as the network felt a Diff'rent Strokes spin off would be a benefit for them. Rae was chosen to star in the new series as she had proper experience to lead her own show, and that Mrs Garrett wasn't central to Diff'rent Strokes success.
