This film's producers were likely hoping it would replicate the success of one of the biggest box office hits of the 1950s, Cecil B. DeMille's 1952 Best Picture Oscar winner The Greatest Show on Earth, which grossed nine times its $4 million budget. Instead (and despite starring the biggest box office name of the time, Doris Day) it lost M-G-M several million dollars.
