The back of the X-wing has a decidedly unfinished look. It is made to look very much like an early 1960's Formula 1 car. With the protruding suspension of the wheels, the cars bore a great resemblance to the X-wing. The "dome" of the driver's helmet, which can be seen through the open roll bar, is suggestive of the presence of an astro droid. This is not a coincidence. The opening montage of the film Grand Prix (1966) may provide a hint. It was shot and edited by none other than George Lucas.
