(at around 22 mins) Upon entering Carta Abbey for the first time and before meeting the 'Abbess', Sister Irene sees that on the altar in the middle of the room is a symbol of two snakes devouring themselves, which is commonly known as the Ouroboros. It is a symbol originating from Ancient Egyptian and Greek Mythology and predominantly is a symbol of the cycle of Birth, Death, and Rebirth. In the context of the movie, the symbol more than likely is a perversion of the original meaning and is to signify the association of the Duke of Carta with Valak, much like the Pentagram/Pentacle was perverted by the Church itself as a symbol of devil worship, when in reality it is just a traditional non Christian symbol of worship.
