Director James Gunn cast Michelle Yeoh (Aleta Ogord) as a tribute to 1990s Hong Kong films, of which he is a fan. Yeoh is a Malaysian actress who rose to fame in 1990s Hong Kong action films, such as Huang jia shi jie (1985) and Wu xia qi gong zhu (1993). She would later go on to play a totally unrelated character in another Marvel Cinematic Universe installment Shang-Chi e la leggenda dei dieci anelli (2021).
