Germaine Greer, special guest for the 1997 Grand Final, had been so convinced that a team of mature students from the Open University were going to beat their opponents, Magdalen College, Oxford, that she had spent much of the programme rehearsing her congratulatory speech for the Open University team. When Magdalen won she had to improvise her congratulations.
