In the novels, Brom is actually Eragon's biological father. This is revealed in book three, Brisingr, but was never touched upon in the movie due to the cancellation of potential sequels. Eragon's mother, Selena, is long dead by the film's events, and her backstory is detailed in the sequel novels.
