In the December 2022 issue of SFX Magazine, showrunner Jonathan Kasdan revealed that the series features many references to the Willow novelization by Wayland Drew (1988) and the Willow roleplaying game sourcebook by Allen Varney (also 1988), which Kasdan took very seriously as a fan. However, the "Chronicles of the Shadow War" trilogy of books written by Chris Claremont from a story by George Lucas (published between 1995 and 1999) is described by Kasdan as 'tangential' to this new story.
