Rekha stated the film flopped because Jaya Bachchan demanded changes in the script mid way. This altered the original script. Another factor was that Jaya Bachchan's character initially plays a 'Bhabhi' figure to Amitabh. This did not gel with audience. Another factor Rekha mentioned was the film was publicized as a real life story. Silsila was fictional and was not based on facts. This mislead the public. During the making of the film, Rekha and Jaya had separate make-up rooms. They did not meet and interact with each other unless they had to shoot a scene. This type of atmosphere proved toxic and perhaps the bad vibes proved unlucky for Silsila. Also the ending was not convincing. Yash should have been bold enough to show Amitabh-Rekha uniting.
