In the original script and early into filming, the space ships over New York and Washington D.C. were situated above Central Park and the Washington Monument respectively. This was changed for larger (and more iconic) locations in those cities, though a small photo of the ship of the Washington Monument can be seen in the news segments made for the film and featured on the 20th Anniversary Blu-Ray.
