Garrett A. Morris, who played Martin's boss Stan Winters for the first three seasons, said his contract was not renewed for Martin by Martin Lawrence, meaning he was basically fired from Martin by Martin Lawrence. He stated in 2019 interviews with Netflix and TV One he did not receive a reason as to why he was terminated from Lawrence or the producers of the show. During the middle of shooting season 2 of Martin in 1994, Morris was shot in a robbery attempt in the South Central section of Los Angeles. The assailants grabbed him from behind but Morris reacted quickly as he is a first-degree black belt. One of the robbers fired two shots that hit Morris in his chest and stomach. According to the interviews, the relationship between Morris and Lawrence was fragile and there was often tension behind the scenes. A tragic incident appears to be what led to the final rift.
