Sean Connery was 57 at the time of filming, which is five years short of forced retirement from the army. His character is a Lt. Colonel, which is a rank usually earned after sixteen years of honorable service, starting as a 2nd Lieutenant and pending an opening for promotion. The average age of a Lt. Colonel in the Army is 39. If his character had joined as an enlisted man this would make his age about right but even so, he is very old for being only four grades above 2nd Lieutenant. And it is unlikely that he would make full Colonel. And he is a Lt. Colonel in charge of what? a dozen MPs? Certainly far less than a company. Chances are that he was held back because of his temperament. And being held back might well have added fuel to the fire.
