The bookstore where Sally and Marie were browsing in 1987 was Shakespeare & Company, located on the Upper West Side on the corner of West 81st & Broadway. This location closed in 1996. After a few other stores came & went, the building (2251-9 Broadway, aka 250-256 W 81st) was demolished in 2017 and an 18-story condo was built. As of 2022, there is still one Shakespeare & Co bookstore in NYC, located at 939 Lexington Ave near Hunter College.
