While director Lenny Abrahamson was looking for an actress to play "Ma," an associate suggested that he see Brie Larson in Short Term 12 (2013). He was instantly impressed with Larson's ability to inhabit her character so completely and unpretentiously. This was precisely what he sought for his film.
