Director Jeff Fowler has taken a lot of inspiration from Sonikku adobenchâ (1998) and its sequel Sonikku adobenchâ 2 (2001) as the movie's opening set piece is a direct visual parallel to the opening of Adventure, with manholes exploding open with gushing water in the middle of the city. While this signaled the arrival of the water-being Chaos in the game, it's more of a fun reference for fans of the series here. Likewise, while Sonic is first seen snowboarding in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) briefly during IceCap Zone, the snowboarding sequence in this film closer resembles the snowboarding level from Sonic Adventure, down to the re-use of a piece of scrap as the board.
