This was the first chronological movie appearance of Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since he was stabbed and, apparently, killed by Loki, in The Avengers (2012). He was later revealed to have survived, as explained on the television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013).
