Lt. Michael Murphy graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1998. To date, he is the only Penn State graduate that has been awarded the Medal of Honor (posthumously). A veterans' memorial plaza was constructed on Penn State's University Park, PA main campus, and is dedicated and named in the memory of Lt. Murphy. The plaza was dedicated on the evening before the Penn State - Navy game played on September 11, 2012 (Patriot Day).
