Despite not guest-starring on Dallas (1978), Michele Lee was producers David Jacobs's and Michael Filerman's first and only choice for the lead role of Karen Fairgate MacKenzie. She auditioned for it and won the role. In fact, ever since she had guest-starred in several dramatic and sitcom television series in the early 70s, she'd been looking for a television series to star in, hoping for a situation comedy, but instead she ended up on this series.
