According to creator Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, with directors Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard both attached to the project as producers with Dreamworks Pictures and Imagine Entertainment both respectively owned by Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios, this film would be a joint production. But there was a lot of tension and infighting between the studios: Universal didn't like their longtime collaborator Spielberg working at Paramount, which would go onto feuding with Dreamworks. When Universal announced the release date, they didn't run it by Dreamworks and thus, killed the possibility of making merchandising for the film. Mitchell said due to the various studio business affairs being involved, it attributed to the film's underperformance at the box office.
