When producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki conceived the series in 1973, he originally intended that the series be "Asteroid Ship Icarus", a space opera based on "Lord of the Flies" (a crew of multinational teenagers conflicting with each other), and that their ship (known as the Icarus) be a hollow asteroid with engines attached. The enemy aliens were also known as the Rajendora. These concepts were later rejected/revised by Leiji Matsumoto.
