The series could have ended with the death of Matt McNamara (John Hensley), instead of leaving on a plane with Ava Moore (Famke Janssen). It could have ended with Matt being murdered by Christian (Julian McMahon), or Matt committing suicide, when Ava tells him she doesn't really love him. But both were rejected.
