Oliver Hardy was actually born Norvell Hardy, but he adopted his father's name Oliver as a tribute to a dad he never knew. He was called Oliver Hardy for the remainder of his professional life. But friends and family called him "Babe" Hardy instead -a nickname that he was given by his Italian barber, who applied talcum powder to his cheeks while crying out, "nice-a-bab-y". In a lot of his later films at Lubin he was billed as Babe Hardy.
