Dr. Vivienne Graham and Ken Watanabe's Dr. Ishiro Serizawa met their demises. Graham was killed relatively early by King Ghidorah, but director Mike Dougherty explained that her death was necessary for developing the film's monstrous antagonist: "But seriously, I love Sally and I love Dr. Graham. But I also love tragedy and wanted to show the sheer ruthless brutality of Ghidorah, which means SOMEONE had to bite it and killing off a new character or an extra wouldn't have the same impact. But someone you like that hurts."
