The day after X: A Sexy Horror Story (2022)'s South by Southwest premiere, writer/director Ti West revealed during preproduction for this film he had used his time during a mandatory two-week quarantine in his hotel to write a prequel, Pearl (2022). As the production for "X" wrapped, and because the sets were already constructed, he asked star Mia Goth if she wished to remain in New Zealand and film "Pearl," which she readily accepted. The prequel released later in 2022.
